How to Start a Reading Journal

Here are some steps to help you get started with your reading journal:

  1. Choose a journal or notebook that you enjoy writing in it can be a bre bought book, a template you download and print out or even a digital journal like good notes.
  2. Set aside time each day to write in your journal.
  3. Record the title and author of the book you're reading. And use colours and stickers to personalise your journal the way you like it. Stickers could be anything from book covers to dragons, and the easy way is to buy them online and print them out at home on sticker sheets, that way you will have unlimited stickers of your choosing!
  4. Summarize the key points or plot of the book and write down your favourite quotes in the book. Either because they inspire you or scare you, or just are good.
  5. Reflect on how the book made you feel and what you learned from it. Is there a hidden agenda ? Do they want you to feel a certain way, cheer you up, turn you and, make you angry? Books brings out a lot of different feelings in everyone and not everyone feels the same about the same book. And that's a very good reason to put to paper how you feel about the book for no one else to judge but yourself.
  6. Maybe you are an author in the making yourself then reading books and writing about them is a very good way to help find your book voice.

Tips for Effective Journaling

To make the most of your reading journal, consider the following tips:

  • Be consistent with your journaling habit, write down favourite quotes and lines from the book as you read them or use stickers and book marks to mark off where you have read something you like and then it is easier to find when you are done with the book.
  • Use your journal as a space for self-expression and exploration, no one but you needs to read the book journal so write what is in your mind and heart.
  • Try different journaling formats, such as bullet points, mind maps, or creative writing.  It is not a one thing suits all kind of thing, you do you!
  • Revisit your old journal entries to track your reading journey and personal growth. And add to them, maybe after reading book 2 in a series something as been explained in book 1, then take a note of it.
